Evaporative cooling
One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is, does AirConditioning Canberra install evaporative coolers? To answer this, it is important to highlight that, while we do not install evaporative coolers from scratch, we do still replace, repair and do all service work on evaporative cooling units around Canberra and the surrounds.
This is a very important distinction as, at AirConditioning Canberra we do have technicians who are highly skilled and trained in installing all forms of heating and cooling units. As explained above, we still are replacing old evaporative cooler units with new ones as needed.
Evaporative cooling was quite a popular form of cooling around Canberra. It is important we provide background and context around why we do not install new evaporative systems from scratch, but only replace, repair and service evaporative cooling units.
To understand this, it is important to first provide clarity around what defines an evaporative cooling unit. Evaporative cooling will only be effective in cooling your house when:
- Doors at either end of the house are kept open in order to let natural air come through
- You are able to rely on outside air to cool your house as evaporative cooling pulls the air from outside to in
- The weather outside needs to be dry, not humid
Evaporative coolers do work best in dry heat, which historically was the case in the Nation’s Capital, but over the past few years we have seen a lot of changes to our weather conditions which has meant that they are not necessarily the best choice in Canberra anymore.
Some of the reasons evaporative coolers aren’t ideal in Canberra anymore:
- Bush fires (when there’s smoke in the air, you can’t run your system due to the outside smoke in the air)
- The climate in Canberra has changed
- Surrounding dams are full of water - This is creating a lot more humidity than normal and as we have just learnt, evaporative units don’t work well in humidity
Important
Considering the change in climate in Canberra over time, you should get your evaporative cooler serviced to ensure it does not break and require repair. These cooling units are similar to most things in life, it is much cheaper to service regularly than to replace when fully broken.
